Summer Narrow Brim Hat

I love crocheting year round. The busier I was working on projects, it felt weird making winter items in the summer. I wanted to start making some fun summer items.
My friend posted on Facebook that she was looking for a sun hat to fit her ‘big’ head. She was worried about her skin so she was looking for a big sun hat to protect her face. It got me thinking about summer hats. I started doing some research and found the cotton yarn I liked working with that would give the hat enough structure. Then I tried several hat patterns I found. None of them were quite right, so I decided to work up my own. The first style I did was the Wide Brim hat.

The wide brim is great for the beach/pool and has great sun coverage, but I wanted a smaller brim that I could wear anytime…not just at the beach. That is where the Narrow Brim Sun Hat came about. They can be worn anywhere Spring, Summer or Fall.

Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream yarn has so many amazing colors. You can find a color to match just about anything.
I use a wire in the brim to keep it’s shape. I tried several kinds like 100lb fishing wire or a metal wire someone else suggested. With both of these wires, you had to use electrical tape to connect the ends and for selling the hats, I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. If you are just making for yourself and want to save a little money, you could use the 100lb fishing wire. I wanted a little better connection and stability since I was selling the finished product. I tried a couple different kinds, but this was my favorite wire with connectors from a fellow Etsy seller, Elsewhen Millinery. While working on writing up this blog, I did find a newer listing for the fishing wire that does actually have connectors, you can find that here.

Rd 38– 9 SC, SC inc, repeat around, in the last space only do 1 SC (not an increase), SL ST in the next space and CH 1 (photo 5). ( sts)
This is where you add the wire and crochet Round 39 over the wire (photo 6)
Rd 39- SC over the wire all the way around, SL into the first ST of the round, CH 1 (photo 7)
Rd 40- Crab Stitch around, tie off and weave in ends (photo 8)
(I don’t cut the wire or connect it with the joint connector until I have crocheted all the way around back to where I will join them. Place the hat on a flat surface and make sure you don’t have to much or too little wire. It should lay flat, not curl or buckle. Put the joint connector on one end and clamp closed. Measure where to cut your wire, cut, insert into the connector and clamp closed. Then finish crocheting over the joint and finish the round.)
