At Christmas, my dad requested a pair of orange mittens for when he goes hunting to match the hat I made him. Since they would be for hunting, I chose to make them with 2 strands of yarn so they were thicker and I also added a lining. So I created my Chunky Mitten pattern. Lining is optional, but the pattern includes directions for adding a lining.

While working on the Chunky Mitten pattern, I decided to make a drink mitt to match. They have become a popular item and since we are using 2 strands of yarn for the chunky set, you can make these in your favorite team colors! So you can make your Chunky Drink Mitt in your team colors for your tailgates!! They also work up fast!

School Colors: Michigan State, Michigan and Hope College

The mitten pattern comes in 7 sizes, but the drink mitt only comes in 2 adult sizes: regular and large.

Baby, Toddler, Child, Youth, Adult, Large Adult, Extra Large Adult (not pictured)
Top: Regular Adult, Bottom: Large Adult

For the lining, I purchased fleece fabric and I used my rotary cutter with a skip stitch blade. I made 1 full mitten (but didn’t finish off), then I layed the mitten on a piece of cardstock and traced the mitten and cut it out. I saved that as my template.

After I cut out my fleece (2 of them per mitten), I sewed them together and used the large skip stitch to make holes at the top. I frogged the cuff and inserted the lining. Then I crocheted the cuff by inserting the hook into my stitch and then into a hole in the lining. I tried to line up the holes as evenly as possible. On most sizes, there was a stitch or 2 that I did without including the lining.

The lining is not necessary. These are a quick make (without the lining) for winter markets. They also match the drink mitt for a complete set. Perfect for gifting.

Adding a lining is not necessary. These mittens are thicker with the double strand, but if you want a little more warmth, add a fleece or flannel liner.

I made up 1 complete mitten (leave a long tail and don’t finish off. you frog the cuff to attach the lining.)

-Trace the mitten on a piece of paper or cardstock.

-Cut 2 for each mitten.

-Sew around the side and thumb. DO NOT sew across the top, that will seal the mitten.

-Use your rotary cutter with the skip stitch blade across the top.

-Insert into the mitten with the the ‘right side’ of the liner to the inside of the mitten (seam is exposed on the outside).

-Using your 6.0mm hook follow the instructions for the cuff inserting your hook into the stitch and then into the fleece. This will attach the liner to the mitten.

-Optional: you can tack down the bottom of the mitten to prevent it getting pulled out when taking the mittens off.

-Continue to the thumb if you haven’t added it yet.
